Entry #10: The Coolest Critters in Animation: Let's Talk About Ice Age

Hello, everyone! Welcome to my last blog post! I couldn't think of what to write about this time, but I'll leave you with my thoughts since I binge-watched the entire Ice Age series. Before I go into the movies, the Ice Age movies are for more than just kids. While watching the films, I realized that plenty of adult jokes were hidden just above children's heads. So that way, every age could enjoy these movies. I don't know what brought me to watch them again, maybe nostalgia, but I'm sure glad I did. Now I even find myself quoting some of the goofy things that the characters have said.

The first movie would be my second favorite of the series. Starting in the first movie, Ice Age, we are introduced to Sid the Sloth (my favorite character), Manny the Mammoth, and Diego, the Sabertooth tiger. Sid's family left him behind, leading to him meeting Manny, the lonely Mammoth. Manny initially doesn't care for Sid, wanting to be left alone as he was. Eventually, Sid and Manny find a lost human child, which they plan to return. However, Diego and his pack notice the human child and want to eat him as revenge for the tribe killing past pack members. Diego tries to take the baby but ultimately fails. As a result of his failure, Diego attempts to earn Manny and Sid's trust back to lure them into a trap. As they go on their adventure, Diego leads them into a set-up but decides to help them instead of killing them since they have bonded over the few days. The movie ends with Sid, Manny, and Diego fighting off the group of Sabertooths and bringing the human baby back to his family. Throughout the series, a little squirrel named Scrat runs around, hoping to get his acorn.

In the second movie, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Manny, Sid, and Diego discover that a massive ice dam is about to break, which will flood their valley and destroy their home. As they attempt to find a new place to live, they encounter several new characters, including a female mammoth named Ellie, who believes she is a possum, her two possum "brothers," and a group of mini-sloths. Along the way, Manny and Ellie develop a romantic relationship, which was nice since he thought he was the last mammoth for the longest time. Eventually, the animals reach a new home and can escape the flood, but not before facing several challenges and dangers.
In Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, my third favorite movie, Manny and Ellie are expecting a baby mammoth, which causes Diego to question his place in the herd and consider leaving. Meanwhile, Sid discovers three dinosaur eggs and decides to raise them as his own, but when they hatch, their birth mother comes looking for them and takes Sid with her. Manny, Ellie, and the rest of the gang set out on a mission to rescue Sid. They encounter a new world filled with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures along the way. They also meet a swashbuckling weasel, Buck, who helps them in their quest. Buck was very funny during the movie, he's a little crazy. Ultimately, they rescue Sid and return home only after facing several dangerous challenges and making new friends.

In Ice Age: Continental Drift, my fourth favorite Ice Age movie, Manny, Sid, and Diego are separated from their families when the continents begin to shift, causing a massive earthquake that separates them from their homes. As they try to find their way back, they encounter a band of pirates led by a primate named Captain Gutt, who is determined to stop them. Along the way, they meet several new characters, including Manny's long-lost daughter, Peaches, who struggles to fit in with the other teenage mammoths. As they battle the pirates and try to find their way home, Manny, Sid, and Diego confront their challenges and learn important lessons about family, friendship, and loyalty.

In Ice Age: Collision Course, Scrat's pursuit of an acorn sets off a chain of events threatening the entire planet. As a result, Manny, Sid, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a new adventure to save themselves and their friends. Along the way, they encounter several new characters and reintroduce Buck, who is on a mission to stop an asteroid from hitting Earth. They also face several challenges and obstacles, including a group of dino-birds who want to prevent them from reaching their destination. Ultimately, the animals can save the planet and return home, but only after learning important lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of family.

Thank you for reading my Ice Age post and all of my other posts. I loved these movies as a kid and I love them more now. These animated movies are one of the only series of animated movies that actually never fails to make me laugh while watching. How did you feel about the Ice Age movies?

  1. Hi Benny. I loved your post about the Ice Age movies. I watched them all the time when I was a kid. I still do sometimes. My favorite movies are #1 and #5. I just love their wacky adventures and their lessons about family and love. It's hard to believe it's been twenty years since the first film.
