Entry #7: Fresh: A Film That's Anything But Stale

Food. It's such a basic need, yet many of us take it for granted. We grab a bite without a second thought, assuming that the food we eat is safe and nutritious. But what if we really knew where our food came from? What if we really understood the processes involved in getting it from the farm to our plates? I know that I hardly ever though about where I get my food. I've certainly thought about how food was processed but never actually looked into it. "Fresh" is a film that goes in depth about the food process from farms. Now that I've watched this film, it's not something I can overlook anymore.

Through stunning visuals and informative interviews, Fresh takes viewers on a journey to discover how some of our most popular foods are made. From chickens to cattle, we learn about the challenges and potential risks associated with modern food production. We also see how farmers are working to improve their practices, ensuring that the food they produce is healthier and more sustainable. The audience of this film may be regular people just like you and me who are curious about how our food comes to be.

One of the film's main goals is to educate and empower viewers, encouraging them to think about their food choices and push for positive change. It's hard to ignore the emotional impact that this film has, even if you've never really thought about where your food comes from. But that's exactly what the film is trying to accomplish. The tone of the film is serious and concerned to demonstrate to the viewer that the food process is something to educate yourself about.

I personally found myself shocked by some of the practices that were highlighted, such as tossing baby chicks onto the ground and feeding dead animals to other animals. At the beginning of the field when two farmers were talking about chickens, I was surprised that the farm hands just tossed the baby chicks onto the ground without a care. I have no idea if this hurt the animals but it just looked aggressive, which surprised me. I also was a little taken aback when I heard that farmers fed dead animals to animals for feed. It was also upsetting to hear that the new farming techniques are actually more negative than positive because they deplete our soil quicker and are less healthy and abundant for us. The film has made me question the labels on food, wondering if everything is exactly as it claims to be.

I personally like this film because of how it goes in depth about certain farming processes that us viewers don't really know about so we can be educated. It taught me a lot about the process that I didn't even think about. I learned that in the animal feed the farmers give to the animals, they are packed with antibiotics which allow the animals to live together in great numbers. I also found out that a big cause of mad cow disease is feeding dead cows to cows. Also, chickens help farmers by picking out larvae from the plants that cows graze on. The more a farm processes their crops, the less nutritious they become.

In the end, Fresh is more than just a film. It's an eye-opening experience, making us realize just how important it is to understand where our food comes from. This film matters because without this film, I would not have learned about how different farm diseases spread and how processed farm food may harm my health. Although it may be easier for Americans to not know about issues regarding the food that we eat but it is in no way better. I believe that everyone should know what they are putting into their body, that way everyone has an opportunity to be healthy. Everyone should bother caring because we need to take care of our bodies and watch what we put in it. If we want to live healthier and fuller lives, we need to eat more nutritional foods. It also serves as a reminder that we have the power to make a difference, whether it be through supporting sustainable farming practices or simply making more mindful choices when it comes to food. How do you feel about the food process?

  1. Hi Benny. I was also shocked when they mentioned in the movie that farmers feed their farm animals dead animals. I'll never think of the term "herbivore" the same way again. I also agree with you that we should always pay attention to what we put in our bodies; in more ways than one. Great work.
